About Romania Passport Photo Requirements

Romanian passport photos are specified by the MAI (Ministerul Afacerilor Interne — Ministry of Internal Affairs). The 35x45mm format requires a plain white background and a head height of 31-36mm from chin to crown — a similar range to Belgian requirements. Glasses are not permitted in Romanian passport photos.

MAI requires a completely neutral expression with the mouth closed and both eyes open. The face must be centered and evenly lit with no shadows. Photos must be in colour, show true skin tones, and have been taken within the last 6 months. The photo must show your current appearance.

Romanian passport (paşaport) and buletin (carte de identitate) applications are submitted at the local Serviciul Public Comunitar de Evidenţă a Persoanelor (SPCEP) or at Romanian consulates abroad. Citizens abroad can also apply online through the MAI e-services portal for certain document types.

Common Mistakes in Romanian Passport Photos

1

Wearing glasses

MAI prohibits glasses in all Romanian passport and identity document photos. Remove all eyewear before taking your photo — this includes clear prescription frames.

2

Head height outside 31-36mm

SPCEP officers measure head height precisely. The 31-36mm range is checked at the counter, and photos outside specification require a retake. Our AI crops to the correct range.

3

Background not pure white

Romania strictly requires a plain white background. Cream, grey, or light blue backgrounds — accepted by some neighbouring countries — are not acceptable for Romanian documents.

4

Photo with visible jewellery or accessories

Large earrings, necklaces, or hair accessories that cast shadows on the face must be removed. Piercings must not create reflections that distort the facial image.
