About Egypt Passport Photo Requirements

Egyptian passport photos are specified by the Passports, Immigration and Nationality Administration (PENA) under the Ministry of Interior (وزارة الداخلية). The 40x60mm format is used — larger than the European 35x45mm standard. Egypt's e-passport (جواز السفر الإلكتروني) is now the standard document issued at Egyptian Civil Status Authority offices.

PENA strictly prohibits glasses in passport photos. The background must be plain white with no shadows. Expression must be completely neutral with both eyes open and mouth closed. For women, hijab is permitted but the full face from forehead to chin and cheek to cheek must be clearly visible.

Egyptian passport applications are submitted at the Civil Status Authority (مصلحة الأحوال المدنية) offices in Egypt, or at Egyptian consulates and embassies abroad. The online application service through the Egyptian government portal has reduced the need for in-person visits in some cases.

Common Mistakes in Egyptian Passport Photos

1

Wearing glasses

PENA prohibits glasses in all Egyptian passport photos. Remove all eyewear before taking your photo — this is enforced at every Civil Status Authority office across Egypt.

2

Using the wrong 35x45mm size

Egypt requires 40x60mm, which is larger than the European standard. Photos from photo booths in Europe or other countries using 35x45mm will be rejected at Egyptian offices.

3

Background with any shadow or tint

The white background must be completely uniform. Shadows from lighting or a slightly tinted background will cause rejection during the physical inspection at the Civil Status office.

4

Expression showing any emotion

The biometric requirement is for a completely neutral, expressionless face. Even a slight smile or raised eyebrows — common in casual photos — will fail the PENA biometric check.
